Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)

An intact skin barrier is essential to a healthy skin. Barrier function decreases following damage to the skin and is low in dry skin and mild eczema. Barrier function is assessed by measuring the rate of water loss through the skin (Transepidermal water loss, TEWL). The Tewameter (Courage & Khazaka) enables accurate measurement of TEWL and is used to support claims of barrier repair.
