Efficacy Testing

Moisturisation

Capacitance/Conductance studies

Moisturisation of the skin also leads to change in the electrical properties of the stratum corneum most notably conductance or capacitance. Cutest uses the Corneometer (Courage & Khazaka, GmbH) a capacitance based measurement. Studies can support moisturising claims, percentage increase in moisture, all day claims etc.

  • 20 subjects
  • Single or multiple application test design
  • Measure increased moisture levels over time and with treatment
  • Comparisons before and after, with competitors or placebo

Measurements of skin replicas

Moisturisation of the skin leads to an accumulation of water within the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. As a result the skin surface becomes smoother and the surface roughness decreases. The effect can be measured using skin surface replicas. Analysis of these replicas by the Visioline system (Courage & Khazaka, GmbH) gives internationally recognised surface roughness parameters that enable the claim for skin smoothing or moisturisation to be made. The replicas can also be examined microscopically by light or scanning electron microscopy and the changes visualised.

  • 20 subjects
  • Single or multiple application test design
  • Silicone rubber replicas made of test sites
  • Skin roughness parameters determined by Visioline
  • Photography and profiles before and after application
  • Supports moisturising and skin smoothing claims

Dry Skin studies

Dry skin is a common complaint. Central heating and frequent washing aggravate it. Assessment of dry skin is made by a dermatologist or by using D-Squame tapes (CuDerm Corporation). The Corneometer can also be used to assess the extent of skin dryness.

  • 20 dry skin sufferers
  • Multiple application regression test design
  • Clinical grading of skin dryness
  • Other measurements if required e.g. Corneometer, D-Squame
  • Supports moisturising, relieves dry skin claims

Surface texture or micro-topography (Visioscan)

The skin surface can be studied directly using a light video camera and special UVA light (Visioscan, Courage & Khazaka). The image is analysed using the SELS (Surface Evaluation of Living Skin) software to give skin smoothness, roughness and scaliness.

  • 30 to 50 subjects
  • Single use of product or repeated use over 2 to 4 weeks, dependent on product
  • Visioscan assessment before and after product use
  • SELS parameters derived to give percentage change with treatment
